New economic data out of China on Wednesday shows the world's second-largest economy is still struggling to bounce back from the pandemic. China's GDP for the last three months of 2023 grew by 5.2%, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. But the latest disappointing economic data puts pressure on policymakers to act again to boost the economy. The 2023 bounce back from Covid-19 restrictions did not go as expected, but we believe the stocks' declines already reflect China headwinds and that the Chinese economy will regain its footing in time. We simply can't sell this casino operator because once it's clear the Chinese economy has stabilized, the stock is going to rally.

She mentioned Everything but the Girl — which Madley Croft’s parents raised her on — or even Cher’s “Believe,” which she cited as her favorite song. Between xx releases, she worked in the background on songs for artists like Dua Lipa and King Princess. When the producer Mark Ronson once asked her if she wanted to sing a song they’d written together, she declined. But she couldn’t picture herself singing a pop song. She unfurled herself to him almost immediately, and he became a trusted collaborator who helped write the majority of the songs on “Mid Air.”

Researchers published two new papers on the human Y chromosome. That's because the Y chromosome is "the most complex, most repetitive chromosome," said Monika Cechova, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Because of all the gaps in the Y chromosome genome reference, researchers haven't fully understood how the chromosome contributes to overall health.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk pledged in 2014 not to "initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology." The company says the legal action comes in response to a lawsuit that Cap-XX originally filed against Tesla subsidiary Maxwell Technologies in 2019 for patent infringement. Like Cap-XX, Maxwell makes capacitors for electric vehicles that increase their energy-storage capabilities. The patents that Cap-XX allegedly infringed relate to electrodes used in supercapacitors, which Tesla called the "primary source of the device's power capabilities." Tesla said the electrodes used in Cap-XX's supercapacitors work in the same way as Maxwell's patented technology.

Inside the Shed’s Sonic Sphere
  + stars: | 2023-07-02 | by ( Zachary Woolfe | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The xx remix did nicely separate the bass, coming up palpably but not too heavily out of the bottom of the sphere, from the voices around and above. For all the souped-up spiffiness of the Sonic Sphere, the programming on Saturday felt like a retread of artists who were more interesting when Alex Poots, the Shed’s artistic director, presented them during his stint at the Park Avenue Armory uptown. Levit, the following year, played Bach as part of an ornate concentration exercise orchestrated by Marina Abramovic. Both of them on Saturday were under 40 minutes, but I found myself getting antsy well before time was up. Perhaps the audiences at Burning Man, the techno-hippie hedonist bonanza in the Nevada desert where a Sonic Sphere was built last year, were more engrossed, experiencing it on harder drugs than the Coke Zero I’d had with dinner.

F/A-18E/F Super Hornets have mostly replaced F/A-18 Hornets as the US Navy's carrier-based fighters. The Super Hornet — which includes the single-seat F/A-18E and the two-seat F/A-18F — made its maiden flight in 1995. Super Hornet availability is now about 41% compared to about 26% for the Hornet, whose readiness dropped sharply at about the 25-year mark. But the CBO asked a more specific question: How did Hornets compare to Super Hornets at a similar age? Was the discrepancy caused by Super Hornets flying more hours than Hornets?

Jeans as we know them today were born decades later when Strauss teamed up with a tailor to create riveted pants. The Levi Strauss factory in San Francisco in 1882. He purchased fabric from Strauss and made button-fly pants, which were such a hit among customers, he decided to patent them. Modern-day jeans were born, though at the time, they were called "waist overalls" or simply "overalls." The name comes from the French word "Gênes," meaning Genoa, an Italian port city where sailors often dressed in denim, Vice reports.
